Invitations to Demonoid

Ξ March 9th, 2009 | → 4 Comments | ∇ internet |

No, I don’t have, YES, I do need one. I tried to get one like everybody else, keeping an eye on their website to see when the registrations are open; I don’t know what criteria of opening the registrations do they have, but I do know that this opportunity arises only once in a while. Last time when registrations were open on demonoid was, if the information is right, on 8th of November 2008; So, I can say, considering the frequency of opening the registrations there, that I’ve just missed the chance of being a demonoid member. But still I hope that is somebody out there that can help: if you have a demonoid invitation for me I am happily willing to arrange an exchange with other invitations or even to arrange a payment for the privilege of becoming a member.

“sent to Coventry”

Ξ March 8th, 2009 | → 0 Comments | ∇ life, photo |

Does this expression make any sense to you? Did you ever hear it before? If you are just an ignorant European like me, probably not.

I went to Coventry by choice, as a student, but the curse of the three words is here. Where does this phrase come from? Google found for me two possible explanations:

  1. Chambers states that there was once a garrison in Coventry, a fact which was massively unpopular with the local inhabitants, so much so that they would not even speak with any of the soldiers stationed there. Hence, it was effectively guaranteed that any soldier posted to Coventry would be in for some serious shunning.
  2. Coventry was a stronghold of the parliamentary party at the time of the English Civil War, and that it was therefore where the most troublesome Royalists were imprisoned.

Well, these are some nice historical explanations and corroborated with the fact that Coventry was massively bombed during the second World War, with the cathedral story, with the Godiva legend, with the historical certification since 700 AD and many other interesting things that you find when you are looking for some information about the city, can lead you to the most fucked up conclusion that this is a city in witch you may want to spend your life or part of it.

Now forget about “sent to Coventry” as an ancient phrase, as a nice stronghold with red bricks or as a way of ostracizing the unlucky soldiers. I have my own “sent to Coventry” version of the story. Unemployment + frustration + thousands of emigrants from all over the world + poverty + the lack of future of this city + etc. equal the contemporary “sent to Coventry”. My friend, if you are living in Coventry and you do not see that you must leave this sinking wreck, than I would challenge your IQ with the one of a rat. I won’t share here with you the cultural experience that Coventry offered me in the last 6 months, but believe me, it is rich! Here we have the experience of another international student; thanks for sharing mate, but what’s the novelty?

In the end, just a picture made with the phone in our university, the prestigious Coventry University. Facts: someone stole all the computers from a lab passing through the wall of the neighbor room (the room where we were supposed to have a seminary); this happened just one day after the coffee machine evaporated itself from the same floor, the third floor of a building situated in the center of the city. Again, nothing unusual here.

When is undernet going to dye?

Ξ March 7th, 2009 | → 1 Comments | ∇ internet |

First of all, what is undernet now comparing with what it used to be. It was the biggest IRC network in the world with thousands of users from about 50 countries all over the world. This was happening 10 years ago. Things evolved, the simple line of text became old and rusty, we felt like bringing some colors and sounds in what they call “chat”. We saw ICQ, MSN, Y!M, dozens of versions of each of them, with emoticons, audibles, voice and video chats, avatars ( who would ever think of that on IRC, 10 years back? }{ equal :* ?) and loads of other tiring nonsense. Did all these improved our experience online? Maybe, but in the same time we become bored and crabby of everything. We invented dnd, dndfd, afk, brb and dozens of this trash kind to save time, but in the end we just wasted more typing shits that nobody cares about.

Coming back to the irc and undernet. My feel about this is that it is dying more and more everyday waiting for some nostalgic (like me sometimes) to came back and revive it. You will not see a 12 years old kid to know about irc and not know about face book or yahoo messenger, it is more likely to discover that is the other way round, and it is natural to be that way. Still, the undernet servers are running and they seem to be running forever, but it is just a chimera. Even if we like it or now, we care about it or we don’t give a damn, the time of IRCing is gone. The purpose that everybody to be able to communicate with the friends all over the world has now hundreds of material ways of achieving it; blogs, huge social networks, chat programs that are sustained by huge companies with big money and the options are here just countless. The nostalgic corner (undernet, or any other irc network) is smaller and smaller when it comes to pay bills and make donations to keep some servers running. It is just a matter of time until irc and undernet will a story narrated by the old internet geeks the new shiny face book generation.

How much do they need to hold their breath?

Ξ February 28th, 2009 | → 0 Comments | ∇ life |

England, February 5.

Eight centimeters of snow covered the ground over the night. Nothing unusual for me, a case of force mejeure for the others.

Coventry University set off more than half of the classes; I am just surprised, not disappointed or unhappy with their decision.

I try to get to the Sport Center, but guess what, it is closed too. Some shops are with the doors closed, the few brave ones were still selling while the snow was outside! :-)

Buses were not circulating anymore, even if the road was almost dry, no trace of snow or ice.

A friend was supposed to leave back home by plane, but the flight was canceled (btw, how can they fly in Alaska an English native voice asked). All because some innocent snow. I have a picture or two with the fatidical snow from that day.

I miss winter and normal people.

Altec Lansing FX5051 review.

Ξ February 8th, 2009 | → 3 Comments | ∇ IT&Hi_LOW-Tech |

First of all, I’ll start with the frustrating part of being the new owner of this item. I am using windows vista on a laptop. At first I was expecting that I’ll receive in the package a software decoder for the 6 channels (since I am using the system on the USB port). It was an illusion. I spent about 2 days reading on various forums and sites about how to make the system to work at full capacity. What was I looking for? An audio decoder to be able to hear the sound from my PC (movies or music) on 6 channel, not on 2.

Even if Windows Vista is installing properly the drivers for this system and you can hear all the 6 channels in Control Panel under the sound section, when listening to music or watching movies, if you select the 6 channels option from the sub woofer the result will be that only 2+1 channels are working (front left, front right and the sub woofer)

I finally found aud-x decoder  that proved to be the best. You can play even mp3 files decoded on 6 channels, but only with bsplayer (or another player based on DirectX). On winamp I didn’t managed to find a complete decoding solution. I am using at the moment IIS_MP3s_Winamp_Plugin that you can download from http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Winamp_Plugin_MP3_Surround.htm

The best solution if you are using winamp for listening music is to switch the commutator from the back of the subwofer to position 2/4 channels. If playing in bsplayer (music or moveis) -with the Aud-X decoder installed of course- , for a better sound experience, switch to 6 channels and give the proper settings in Aud-X.
I must mention that I’m using the usb port for transmitting the signal to my laptop to the audio system. I was unable to find any external sound card for vista that would work with the altec lansing fx5051. This is vista’s problem. It seems that all the external sound cards( connected via USB) are working faulty delaying or distorting the sound.

My conclusion is that, for now at least, is has no sense to buy an external audio sound card if you intend to use the system with windows vista. USB is good enough. Though, due the usb usage, sometimes when my external hdd starts (wd essentials 1tb) I can hear in speakers some interference. This is not a thing that you will enjoy:| The good part is that is not persisting. As a piece of advice, if you are a laptop owner and an addicted  gamer that is expecting a true 5.1 experience in games, do not buy this audio system (maybe only if you are running on a Windows XP). You will need a sound card to make it work in games.

Another thing that I am not very happy with, is the permanent noise that you can hear from speakers when no sound is played. Is like a summer wind blowing in your years all day long. The only solution is to switch off the audio system or play some music.
Ok, I have a huge list of disadvantages until now. Why should I buy it? Because I tried to be as critic as possible and despite of all above mentioned, it is a great system! The fidelity of the sound is stunning. The 89w are enough even for throwing a party in a 30-50sq.m. room. The remote works great, you can control the rear, center, or overall sound level or to adjust the bass and treble. If your remote doesn’t work after you properly insert the battery, it means that you are not pointing with it to the cute corner of the wired audio control; there is located the IR receiver. For an in depth analyse of the Altec Lansing FX5051 features, check this link.

How to spend you money in troublous times.

Ξ November 14th, 2008 | → 1 Comments | ∇ life, personal |

No advice is enough in times of recession regarding how to spend your money.  Usually people tend not to spend anymore and become too wise about how they consume their earnings. Why? Nobody trusts nobody, nobody trusts banks, markets, stock-exchanges, nobody trusts anything. You don’t have to be an expert to see that. Maybe you would be expecting from me to impulse to moderation, low expenses and an action plan for the fallowing months/years. Crap. Actually, what I have in mind is a little bit different than that: Just give all your money to ebay, buy frivolous things Sunday at the mall, make donations, do anything that involves spending money rather than keeping them under your pillow or in a bank account ( I dislike the concept of “bank” more and more these days, so actually you can use the under-pillow hideout for a while ). Maybe you will ask, ‘well you hypocrite, why do you advise me to waste my money in a dead, or going to die economy and you don’t act that way yourself?’  What? who? I would ask….oh…this is exactly what I did is the answer and if you are not going to help me from saving world’s economy, I will do it all by myself. I am stupid and proud enough to admit that I spent all my money on countless-useless things, and my last 3.99 bucks I donated to Wikipedia. Heil Wikipedia and my pipe!

Mai mult decat Nokia PC Suite

Ξ October 11th, 2008 | → 0 Comments | ∇ IT&Hi_LOW-Tech, internet |

OviSync iti permite sa sincronizezi contacte, calendarul, to do list-ul si notele din telefonul tau pe site-ul ovi.com.

sstep1.pngsstep2.png

Singura potentiala piedica in folositea site-ului ovi.com e faptul ca trebuie sa ai acces la internet de pe telefonul mobil (gprs/edge/3G, wlan etc), insa exista o solutie si daca nu ai: Nokia Ovi PC Suite 1.0 pentru Windows ( in curand si pentru Mac). Enjoy exploring! [^_^]

de doua ori pe zi, trei clickuri

Ξ August 16th, 2008 | → 0 Comments | ∇ internet |

Spor:)

Ξ June 15th, 2008 | → 1 Comments | ∇ life |

RATT gratis
